Understanding and Improving Women’s Work on Digital Labour Platforms (for ILO, Geneva)

Between 2020 and 2023, I along with my team at IIHS, and Center for Internet and Society were commissioned by the Internatioanl Labour Organisation to conduct a country-wide, and pan-sectoral study on women's work in the Indian platform economy. We conducted a novel study creating first-of-its-kind data on women's work in domestic work, beauty and care work, healthcare, ,medical consultation, e-commerce, education, data labelling, and delivery services. The project gathered evidence on working conditions, income-generating opportunities, and policy implications, with the goal of promoting decent work and labor protections.

We presented our research to experts across industry, academia and policy at a consultation, held at the Hyatt Regency, New Delhi on July 27, 2023, brought together representatives from international organizations, research institutions, platform companies, and worker organizations. The event provided an essential forum for sharing insights, discussing policy developments, and exploring strategies to improve protections for women workers on digital platforms.

A conference report is available here. Details about the project are available here. Final report will be out in 2024.
